about ian
Ian Erickson is a composer and performer currently based in Berkeley, California. Originally from southwest Missouri, he is a graduate of Missouri State University and holds two Bachelor of Arts degrees in Music Composition and Jazz Studies with an emphasis in drum set performance.
Ian is an experienced woodworker, having attended the Port Townsend School of Woodworking. There he studied use of traditional hand tools, joinery, and power tools. Following his studies at Port Townsend Ian spent time as an employee at the school, working as a shop assistant.
Many of Ian’s works aim to explore polyphonic textures through the use of complex rhythms and dense harmonies. As a composer he has worked with PARMA Recordings and the Sirius Quartet on a compilation project of string quartets, and his music was selected as a part of the 2020 International New Music Festival organized by the University of Florida’s New Music Consortium. In 2021 he released his first solo album titled t ö l u r, consisting of works written for piano, drum set, and mixed electronics. With a follow up album in 2022 of solo electronic pieces titled (…………).
Along with composition, Ian has spent time working on, developing, experimenting with, and building his own instruments for use in his compositions.
Ian is actively composing new works and is a freelance performer, currently accompanying dance classes in the Bay Area at LINES Ballet and the University of California Berkeley.
